"Into The Unfathomable Abyss"

By Dr. Abner Mality

If you haven't had enough miserable, agony-packed sludge metal crawling into your life recently, here's Coltsblood from England to deliver more of the same. When I saw the first proper track "Beneath Black Skies" lasted 14 plus minutes, I knew what I was going to get before I even hit the play  button. Yessir, that's right...painfully slow, dragged out doom metal with filthy guitar tone and roaring vocals reciting sweet words of inspiration.

I still have appreciation for what Coltsblood are doing and they certainly deliver the heavy, but honestly, there's nothing unique or revolutionary about this kind of stuff anymore. The template was created years ago with Grief, Iron Monkey, Burning Witch, Electric know the drill. At least Coltsblood know enough to toss in some grooving, chugging riffs and even a couple of blasts...those do a lot to make this listenable. And frankly, some of the riffs here, like the opening to "Grievous Molestation"  and the miserable slog of "Abyss of Aching Insanity", are bone-crushing and magnificent.

Two bands come to mind when hearing Coltsblood. One is countrymen Conan. Now Conan truly knows how to create a primitive bulldozer groove...something Coltsblood hasn't mastered to the same degree. There's something about Conan that's different, that stands apart. The other band I think of is American sludge maniacs Cough. Safe to say, if you like what Cough does, then Coltsblood will be up your alley. I have a hard time telling them apart.

Still, there is sometimes a need for brain-flattening, depressing sludge and for times when that need strikes you, there is Coltsblood.
