EGREGORE

EGREGORE    “Synchronistic Delusions”

By Dr. Abner Mality

Apparently there’s more than one EGREGORE out there. This one comes from Utah and they grind away like a swarm of flesh-eating insects. Much of the album is said to be lyrically inspired by the works of Carl Jung and Eastern philosophies. Good luck trying to fathom any of that from the animal noises that pass for vocals here.

When it comes to the music, this is pleasingly violent old-school grindcore that comes across a lot like REPULSION and PHOBIA. The album is long enough to matter, but not long enough to bore. The tracks come rapid fire and without mercy, with “Chaos Protocols” ripping your face off TERRORIZER style in 1:36 while “Dysrhythmic Gloom” breaks your bones with murky doom-dripping riffs at a more robust 4:22. Most of it lies somewhere between these poles.

There are a couple of cool diversions that break things up. “Incorporeal Vivisection” starts with the mesmerizing sound of an Indian tambur, something I can’t get enough of, while “Metaprogramming the 8th Circuit” combines a burst of 70’s spacy synth with a soothing acoustic interlude. And there are the occasional samples that briefly enhance things. But make no mistake, the main focus here is pure raging grindcore in the fashion of the originators of the style. Hope to hear more from EGREGORE!
