LOST TRIBES OF THE MOON

“Lost Tribes Of The Moon”

By Dr. Abner Mality

Lost Tribes Of The Moon might be a new name to reckon with for those into epic metal. Their self-titled debut dabbles in long songs that build slowly into an enveloping climax. Of the six tracks here, only three are true tracks, with the other three being intros or acoustic interludes. That might sound like a sparse value, but two of three main tracks are well over 10 minutes and the other is about eight.

“Wych Elm” demonstrates the Lost Tribe style pretty well. It starts off in fairly average fashion but subtly gains power as it goes along and the last third is truly thunderous doom-influenced metal reminiscent of prime Candlemass. Female vocalist Janine Rohde demonstrates some pretty impressive pipes that fit these tunes well without overdoing the operatic stuff. When Lost Tribes pick up the pace, they have a Mercyful Fate type feel with some excellent lead soloing from Jon Liedtke. Another band that Lost Tribes remind me of is Atlantean Kodex.

The whole record has a very pleasing analog sound that is warm and fuzzy. This record is a real grower that lays a nice foundation for future efforts.
