DEIMLER

DEIMLER     “Immortalized”

By Dr. Abner Mality

DEIMLER is named after Paco Deimler, a death metal fan devoted to classic Swedish and Finnish death metal. Apparently this band had some kind of minor presence in the late 90’s, but only got a record out in 2020. “Immortalized” is their second platter and it’s a concept album that revolves around the “Alien” movies. Which all leads us to the most important question...is it any good?

I’d have to say, not bad at all. Thankfully it’s not another Swe-death clone in a world crumbling under the weight of such bands. There’s just a touch of it here, but really the band is more influenced by the Finnish brand of death metal. There’s kind of an appealing flow to the songs, especially in the first half of the album, which kind of sweeps you along with it. It’s fast but not ultra-fast...heavy without being overbearing...and there’s an odd kind of sadness to the music as well, even though it’s death metal to the core.

The album might have benefited from some pruning. The song “Nocternity” seems like it lasts longer than it actually does and the two tracks following it are solid but unspectacular. As for Paco’s vocals, they should please any fan of gruesome gutterals. I would describe DEIMLER’s sound as an axis where the cavernous meets the technical...like a mash-up of old Finnish grue with near-PESTILENCE angularity.

Not perfect but definitely worth looking into and I’m hoping their next album sees DEIMLER continuing to improve.
