If it's one thing I enjoy more than cheap beer and cheaper tequila it's dirty, filthy, grimy deathgrind that's an assault on the senses and offensive to anyone in earshot. My wife heard me listening to ABRADED's new disc “Ethereal Emanations from Cthonic Caries” and walked away in disgust. The track in question was "Compensatory Contrarianism." I immediately knew this record was a hit.
“Ethereal Emanations from Cthonic Caries” is set to drop September 26 via Redefining Darkness Records. For those not familiar ABRADED were vomited forth in 2018 deep in the infected bowels of Cleveland, Ohio.
They’ve released “Descendants of the Swamp” (Demo, 2018, Aggressively Uninterested), “Abraded” (Full-length, 2021, Maggot Stomp), and “Unadulterated Perversions” (Full-length, 2023, Aggressively Uninterested). In full transparency this is the first time I've heard ABRADED's music and “Ethereal Emanations from Cthonic Caries” blew me away. It’s a full on, neck snapping beast of a record.
Grindcore whether it's death, horror, traditional, etc. can be hit or miss. ABRADED's new record isn't just a hit, it's a full-on homerun of nine unrelenting, ass kicking songs I can't endorse enough. They take it back to the old school (and then some) with tracks one and two, “Ethereal Emanations” and “Menticide” reminding me why I dug EXTREME NOISE TERROR, NAPALM DEATH, TERRORIZER, etc., back in the 80’s.
What I like about ABRADED’s approach to deathgrind is that they embrace the musical aspect of grindcore without getting stuck too deep inside it. Here’s what I mean by that. “Ethereal Emanations from Cthonic Caries” is a grindy metal assault without getting lost inside the freestyle element grindcore is known for. Nor does it get too technical. It rides this fine line well.
Stand out songs on “Ethereal Emanations from Cthonic Caries” include well, how about every track on this record, how about that? Keep an eye on this band, they’re going places. Look out NAPALM DEATH, you have stiff competition with ABRADED. BUY this record ASAP..
