BONGINATOR

BONGINATOR     "The Intergalactic Gorebong of Deathpot"

By Dr. Abner Mality

The band name...the godawful album title...the cover art...song titles like "420 lb. Poop", "From The Ashtray" and "It Makes Babies"...just how bad is this gonna get? The answer is: pretty fuckin' bad.

This is definitely a case of what you see is what you get. I was expecting bad death metal and I got it. Lyrically, this makes CANNABIS CORPSE seem like RUSH and the so-called sense of humor on display here is aimed at those who think "Beavis & Butt-head" is a sober drama. Sure, it can be fun to get stupid and have a laugh. GWAR has made a 30 year career out of it. There's nothing funny about this and on the musical end, it's pretty dull stuff. The drum sound is like "Saint Anger" level, but played by a chimp. Song structures are just basic death metal that doesn't rise to any level worth praising, a combo of "new age" primitive DM ala SANGUISUGABOGG, 200 STAB WOUNDS and the like with typical goregrind. The title track is literally just a series of "zip-zip-a-zooooo" pinched guitar harmonics and not much else. Occasionally BONGINATOR can find a slower, thicker riff that grooves in a catchy fashion..."420 lb. Poop" and the end of "Brined, Smoked and Deep Fried" feature such mildly effective parts. But even so, there are so many bands going that route these days.

"Blunt Smoke Suffocation" is pretty decent and strangely enough, the synth soundscape "Blunt Smoke Interlude 1" emerges as maybe the best thing on the album...it sounds like something SLASHER DAVE would do. But those just aren't enough to satisfy if you're looking for really effective death metal that's well played and doesn't insult your intelligence. This insults your intelligence fiercely and is subpar in most respects. BONGINATOR is a long hit on bad dope...
