Nomad Snakepit Productions is a label dedicated to the most subterranean forms of European black metal. Many of their releases seem to be EP’s and split. Let’s take a look at a couple of their recent albums.
I honestly couldn’t get much out of ARKÆON. They’re a Danish collective with a style that tries to be avant-garde while remaining true to black metal roots. Their music is fast enough, black enough but it leaves me wanting a lot more. Over the course of their release, I was hard pressed to find a riff or a hook that held my interest for long. The production is a lot cleaner than most “true” black metal, yet the material seemed to demand a rawer approach. And there were strange choices that just didn’t work out; “Skimmerpragt” had a mellow interlude that just seemed to “be there” and contributed little to the song. It was a chore getting through this one and I can’t recommend “ Når Bjerge Bliver til StØy”.
Germany’s DOOM CULT COMMANDO fares a lot better, because these guys are just out for pure black mayhem and they don’t mess around. Infernal K from DESASTER is one of the COMMANDOS so that insures there will be speed and riffage. “Das Erwachen der Schlange” doesn’t waste time and dives into an extremely raw version of black metal that resembles war metal. There’s monstrous black brutality on hand here for sure, almost to the point where song structure is lost. But they hang on to enough of it to keep your interest. Four songs here that leave nothing but scorched earth!
Nomad Snakepit are obviously serious about what they’re doing and a name to watch in the black metal underground!
