"Carnal Law"

By Dr. Abner Mality

I'm getting hit with musty, crusty primitive death metal on a weekly basis now, so the revolt against deathcore and technical death metal is really picking up steam. Case in point is Vastum, a new name to conjure with, who have excreted six grinding odes to the pure and sick with "Carnal Law". Lovers of old Incantation, Bolt Thrower, Benediction, you're really gonna have a field day with this one!

Lasting just 33 minutes, the record makes the most of that running time. I wouldn't say Vastum is total doom/death, but the pace is certainly what you would call deliberate. This is one ponderous bulldozer of a band. There's not one throwaway riff or needless solo, intro, sound effect or outro to be found here...everything means something, nothing is wasted. "Primal Seduction" is a gloomy introduction to Vastum, but following cut "Re-Member" really gets the funeral juices flowing, injecting some catchy as hell thrash riffing into the dirge. All the cuts are good, but "Devoid" is the real album epic...utterly monstrous mid-paced brutality.

So there's another champion of filth to join the likes of Witchrist, Omision and Dragged Into Sunlight at the forefront of the war against pretentious death metal...emo-hair dudes, beware!
