WORMWOOD CHRONICLES WRITERS' TOP RELEASES OF 2014

If it's early February, you Worm-maniacs know it is time for our annual lists of the Top 10 albums of the past year. The lineup of the Wormcrew has changed as always but tradition rolls on regardless. This time around, the lists are as eclectic as ever and I hereby present them in the order in which they were received by your humble servant. I'll wrap things up at the end...I'll see you there!

GREAT SUN JESTER'S TOP 10 OF 2014

1. BLACKFINGER                                            "Blackfinger"

Eric Wagner returns after a six-year absence with a powerhouse release. For once, a cliché being true is good - there's something on this album for everyone. Blackfinger's songs fearlessly incorporate a wide variety of sounds to magnificent effect, but never forget to thunder with the power defining Wagner's seminal work with doom metal legends Trouble.

2.  WO FAT                                                                                         "The Conjuring"

These Texan purveyors of gargantuan riffs likely reached their peak with this high-octane release. It's thrilling to consider that the band is still in the early years of their career. There's enough musical diversity in the guitar playing and songwriting to convince all but the most obstinate that there is plenty of life still in guitar-driven rock.

3.  WISHBONE ASH                                                                              "Blue Horizon"

Nearly twenty studio albums into their career, Wishbone Ash is still working at an artistic level few of their peers can consistently reach. This release from the early months of 2014 is one of the band's finest efforts from a recent string of excellent studio albums. A distinctly progressive edge long missing from the band's music enhances the strong songwriting.

4.   THE SKULL                                                                                    "For Those Which Are Asleep"

This release from late in the year delivered everything it promised and more. The band has hit upon an impressively sympathetic tandem in guitarists Lothar Keller (Sacred Dawn, Spillage) and Matt Goldsborough (ex Pentagram). The classic Trouble rhythm section of Jeff Olson and Ron Holzner are in fine form and vocalist Eric Wagner's songwriting and singing alike is at, or near, its peak.

5.   STEAK                                                                                           "Slab City"

Impossible to categorize. This is a high-energy, gritty guitar rock synthesizing a number of rock styles into its attack. Relentlessly heavy from the first note to last, it is deceptively intelligent and never self-indulgent. This is one of the best debuts I've heard in many years and brimming with confidence.

6.   NAZARETH                                                                                     "Rock And Roll Telephone"

Nazareth send retiring vocalist Dan McCafferty out on a resoundingly positive note with this energetic offering. On what likely ranks as Nazareth's strongest studio collection in two decades, McCafferty guts his way through these tracks with every bit of the power, soul, and commitment that has defined his best work with the band.

7.   JOHN GARCIA                                                                                 "John Garcia"

The former Kyuss front man released his first proper solo album this year and it rages with every ounce of the passion you'd expect from this underappreciated voice. Every song brims over with raw rock and roll energy; there isn't a weak track among the lot. Legendary Doors guitarist and songwriter Robby Krieger makes a memorable guest appearance.

8.   APOSTLE OF SOLITUDE                                                                   "Of Woe and Wounds"

This Indianapolis outfit improves with each new release and this album, their third full-length, is an impressive achievement on every level. This is metal with a decidedly intelligent edge - the songwriting dispenses with the genre's usual assortment of tropes to offer listeners enough horror from real life that the fictions perpetuated by their peers sometimes seem childish in comparison.

9.   EARTH                                                                                           "Primitive And Deadly"

Dylan Carlson and his cohorts return with this slow-moving slab of guitar instrumentals. As evocative as ever, Carlson conjures otherworldly landscapes with his epic guitar lines and the minimalist accompaniment adds much. The album also incorporates guest vocalists to spectacular effect for the first time in many years.

10.  TRIPTYKON                                                                                    "Melana Chasmata"

Tom G. Warrior's Triptykon returned this year with a withering follow-up to 2010's Eparistera Daimones. The new album manages to take the pitch-black point of view and passion from that earlier release and amplify it to create a work of bleak, all-too human beauty. This is surprising, challenging music often pushing far beyond what Celtic Frost ever managed.

1.   EVERGREY                                                   "Hymns For The Broken"

2.     JUDAS PRIEST                                                                                "Redeemer of Souls"

3.     MACHINE HEAD                                                                              "Bloodstone and Diamonds"

4.     ACCEPT                                                                                          "Blind Rage"

5.      CRUSADER                                                                                     "Onward Into Battle"

SELENOS LUNOS' TOP 10 OF 2014

1. YOB                                                           "Clearing The Path To Ascend"

Really expansive and incredibly put together doom. I listened to this for a whole day on repeat when I first heard it.

2.    PERTURBATOR                                                                                          "Dangerous Days"

One of the only electronic artists I’ve gotten into. 80’s horror and sci-fi inspired synths all over the place,

3.    TRIPTYKON                                                                                               "Melana Chasmata"

Excellent follow up to their debut "Esparistera Daimones" that is just as heavy and dark. Probably the heaviest sounding album I heard all year.

4.     ABORTED                                                                                                 "The Necrotic Manifesto"

Aborted has been one of my favorite death metal bands since I first heard "Goremageddon", and they’ve been really consistent with putting out great releases. "The Necrotic Manifesto" features all the heavy grooves and horror influences that hooked me in years ago.

5.     ANGUISH                                                                                                    "Mountain"

Really classic styled doom-death from Sweden, this is a solid album through and through.

6.     SAOR                                                                                                          "Aura"

A one man atmospheric, folky black metal from Scotland, this is an incredibly majestic and powerful work.

7,     BLOODBATH                                                                                                 "Grand Morbid Funeral"

"Grand Morbid Funeral" surprised me with how much I liked it. I was initially unsure about Nick Holmes’ vocal style, but it quickly grew on me.

8.     ELECTRIC WIZARD                                                                                        "Time To Die"

It sounds like a bad acid trip, which is exactly what they wanted, and exactly what I wanted to hear from Electric Wizard.

9.     BONGRIPPER                                                                                                 "Miserable"

“If it’s too slow, you’re too happy”. An hour of crushing and oppressive riffs.

10,    MYRKUR                                                                                                       "Myrkur" EP

The first release from the one-woman black metal project is raw, atmospheric, and beautiful, a really unique album.

This year, it seems like old school ruled, as JUDAS PRIEST'S "Redeemer of Souls" popped up on the most lists, followed closely by ACCEPT'S "Blind Rage" and TRIPTYKON's "Melana Chasmata". Unlike last year, no one album topped more than one list....everybody had something different. The final results were interesting to say the least and veered between fairly mainstream to weirdly unpredictable. Hope you enjoy perusing what makes us tick and once again....

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!!!!
