SOLITARY

“The Truth Behind The Lies”

By Dr. Abner Mality

Britain’s SOLITARY has been around quite a while, but I just haven’t checked into them before now. That was my mistake. While not revolutionary in the slightest, these blokes deliver dead solid thrash metal in the classic tradition here.

One thing I have to thank them for right off the bat, is they don’t condescend to putting a token ballad on “The Truth Behind The Lies”. The record is high velocity thrash through and through. They remind me in style a bit like their countrymen EVILE, of whom little has been heard recently. The production is nice and clear, but the guitars have a pleasing growl and the drums have snap. “I Will Not Tolerate” starts things and it’s off to the races. Singer Richard Sherrington has a raspy tone that doesn’t get into guttural territory, perfect for tales of contempt and political bile.

The album also picks up aggression as it moves along. Things get almost death metal heavy with the title track and tunes like “Catharsis” and “Spawn of Hate” keep the anger and intensity high. The approach is basic meat and potatoes, very much drawing from the giants like SLAYER and EXODUS. If I was to nitpick, I’d say the album could do with a touch of freshness to keep from utter derivativeness, but I can’t argue with the fact that SOLITARY deliver satisfying thrash that warms the inner beast.
