“Skeleton Wolf”

By Dr. Abner Mality

It’s hard to stand out from the pack in these days when virtually anything that calls itself a band can release an album. It used to be that you had to claw and scratch to get a record out. Not anymore. In these days when product floods the market continuously, you are confronted with bands like Skeleton Wolf that are not bad but neither do they stand out from the horde.

This is a workman-like self-released effort that gives us 7 odes of riffy blackened thrash in the style of Goatwhore and Skeletonwitch. Sometimes its more thrashy, sometimes more black. The resemblance in name to Skeletonwitch is rather uncomfortable and the cover art has also been seen many times.  I liked the extremely catchy hooks in “At The Sixth Foot” and especially “Whatever Demons”, but the chorus on “M.P.F.F.” is really stupid and “She’s Insane” has an awkward sound to it. The album is well produced and the vocals suitably raw.

There is not too much more to say.  It’s not a bad way for a metalhead to pass the time, but this is something that few are going to play more than a couple of times. Listen to it and move on to the next one. I wish Skeleton Wolf the very best and wouldn’t mind seeing them live, but this is the definition of “middle of the road”.
