AXEL RUDI PELL

"Game of Sins"

By Theron Moore

Lineup:

Johnny Gioeli - Lead and Backing Vocals
Axel Rudi Pell - Lead, Rhythm and Acoustic Guitars
Ferdy Doernberg – Keyboards
Volker Krawczak – Bass
Bobby Rondinelli – Drums

If you noticed, I listed the lineup first.  Good reason for that.  This lineup makes the record the absolute hit it is.  When it comes to metal I’m a fan of all genres and as much as I wanna love everyone, you’re gonna run into bands that try too hard or try forcing an image / sound.  This isn’t that band.  Axel Rudi Pell doesn’t have to try, he lived it.  Start to finish this is one helluva record.

Aside from the musical skills of rhythm section Ferdy Doernberg – Keyboards, Volker Krawczak – Bass and drummer extraordinaire Bobby Rondinelli, are the spot on vocals of Johnny Gioeli who reminds me an awful lot of Robin McAuley during his short lived stint with Michael Shenker.  Gioeli’s voice is powerful and melodic, the perfect complement to the noise from the boyz cranking it loud and proud, the way good rock N roll is meant to be played.

I honestly can’t find a bad song on this record.  If you dig straight forward, back to the 80’s style heavy metal, “Game of Sins” is for you.  Pell does the genre proud with this record.  It’s a fantastic representation of what metal should sound like when it’s done right.  I love it when a band gels the way this one does on record.  The only question is, how soon are they going out on tour?
