OTARGOS

"Apex Terror"

By Dr. Abner Mality

You may experience a feeling of deja vu when reading this review. With such a huge mass of metal releases being unleashed, a certain amount of familiarity is inevitable. Especially when it comes to the likes of "Apex Terror" from France's Otargos.

Simply stated, this is the essence of extreme metal that stings but doesn't leave a mark. It's slickly produced, furious, aggressive and competently done, but little lingers past the initial impact. In terms of sound, it's a lot like Behemoth mixed with doses of sci-fi industrial ala Fear Factory and a touch of blackness. If you've been into underground metal for any length of time, you've heard this kind of stuff before.

I can't fault the band on their intentions and there are moments here and there that really grab your attention, like the massive sounding "Remnants of a Dead Star" and frenetic "Fallout". But we are suffocating under a mountain of "adequate" metal releases right now. A typical week will find the Good Doctor innundated with about 50 promos from bands clamoring for review. This goes on week after week. Otargos are good but not enough to make a ripple in this metallic ocean. That's about all I can say.
