“Scythed Wings of Poisonous Decay”

By Dr. Abner Mality

The nethermost reaches of anti-cosmic hell are getting pretty clogged with bands like NEXUL these days. I would imagine there is barely room to move around down there. Perhaps that’s why this style of roaring bestial black metal is starting to bore me more and more.

NEXUL comes out of the factory with every pre-assembled characteristic necessary: drippy spiked logo, plenty of leather war gear, lots of straight hair over the face, altar table with skulls and candles, echoing beast roars, ticcy-taccy drum barrage, esoteric dark lyrics. They also have some pretty strong riffs now and then, but they are not welded to each other in such a way that complete songs stand out. Nothing here grabs hold of you long term. And that is where wheat is separated from chaff when it comes to extreme metal.

If evil war metal fuels your black heart, NEXUL will do the trick, but they are really a second-tier unit that will be in the shadow of the greats. Maybe in the future they’ll break out of the average zone, but it’s not on “Scythed Wings of Poisonous Decay”.
