NEKROMANTHEON "Rise, Vulcan Specter"

DEATHHAMMER "Onward To the Pits"

By Dr. Abner Mality

When you feel like shit and fear what the future holds, I find there's little better than a dose of neck-breaking thrash to catapult you out of the doldrums and back into the flow of life. Therefore, I owe a lot of thanks to Norway's dose of "Onward To The Pits" jolted me from near-catatonia to violent glee. Just imagine what it will do for "ordinary" humanoids like you!

These two booze-swilling, backpatch-sporting bastards from the fjords have thrown all pretension to the winds with "Onward To The Pits" and have dived headlong into an orgy of thrash inspired by old Sodom, Destruction and more obscure icons of European thrash like Minotaur and Deathrow. This shit fuckin' rips! The raw sound is right from 1986 and these maniacs don't let up on the gas for a microsecond. Never have I felt so strongly that a band actually time-travelled from the mid-80's to the 21st century. Even those high-pitched shrieking yelps sound authentic!  With the track "Fullmoon Sorcery", Deathhammer has created an absolute classic in the vein of "Angel of Death" or "Whiplash" that will put your neck muscles to the ultimate test. But the rest of the onslaught is not far behind. This is exhilerating speed-injected filth!

But wait! The Norse are not through with us yet, for now Nekromantheon have returned on the heels of their "Divinity of Death" gut-ripper with a new thrashing holocaust, "Rise, Vulcan Spectre"! This is a bit more polished and modern than Deathhammer's offering, but the raw hatred and pulverizing speed is still there! "Cast Down To The Void" is a great opener, just like "Deathrashing Sacrifice" was for "Onward To The Pits". These two bands are like a couple of rabid wolves tracking the same prey...Deathhammer has insane energy, Nekromantheon a bit more refinement. But they are both still RABID!

Right now, Norway is producing great metal of all kinds EXCEPT black metal!
