Named after the disgusting flesh-eating drug from Russia, Krokodil is heavily touted as an amazingly original new act blazing a trail of brutality and melody. The band contains members of Gallows, Sikth and Cry For Silence so big things are expected. Well, how about it?

Sorry, folks, this is something you've heard before...quite a few times, in fact. Krokodil is a modern metal band sounding very much like a mash-up of latter-day Sepultura and Meshuggah at their heaviest and rather distressingly, like Korn during the more melodic moments. The super down tuned guitar sound is also nothing new under the sun, but I can't deny the heaviness of this release It's just such a well-worn attack. Vocalist Simon Wright sounds like any of about a million other guys doing the hoarse bellowing shout thing...we've got several of them in my home town, too. Occasionally, he will break into the more "sensitive" type of vocal but this, too, is pretty standard.

I wouldn't quite go so far as to call this nu-metal....the song "Sobek" has a more epic and aggressive approach, "Reptilia Familiar" has an extremely catchy groove and opener "Shatter" lives up to its title...but the promises of the PR sheet are not kept.

Move along, nothing to see here!
