“Ensuring the Bloodline Ends Here”

By Dr. Abner Mality

At some point in the near future, when the plague known as humanity has finally expired, the tortured Earth will breathe a sigh of relief and begin to recover. But the ghosts of a frustrated mankind will remain, howling amidst the ruins of their wrecked planet.

Gridfailure has traveled forward to this time, which is closer than any of us would like to admit, and brought back recordings of the haunted cities of a dead Earth. Or at least, “Ensuring the Bloodline Ends Here” is as close as we will ever come to such a recording. It is basically the work of one man, Dave Brenner, who also toils in Theologian. He has put together a truly eerie and chilling selection of ambient sounds as Gridfailure. Expect no crushing metal or holocaustic industrial here. Instead, this is unsettling and spooky sound collages….metallic skittering, dreary winds blowing through skeletal skyscrapers,  the clanking of useless machinery. And throughout it all, the moans of human ghosts, wailing over what they’ve done to themselves and the planet. Sometimes they are angry, inarticulate shouts from the shades…these are the ones who haven’t accepted their fate. Each of the eight tracks here is a different excursion into this dreadful world.

Gridfailure is the perfect accompaniment to a haunted house act. It’s a lot more interesting and palatable than other dark ambient/power electronics stuff I’ve heard lately. Most of that is just a monotonous electro beat with uninspired dreary vocals over it. Gridfailure is more imaginative. And more effective because of the thought put into it. This is like a horrible warning from a future that is fast approaching.
