"Desechos Humanos"

By Dr. Abner Mality

A very tasty little morsel of grindcore and groovy death metal from these Germans. They are virtually unknown in the States, but "Derechos Humanos" is their third full-length and they seem to be pretty popular in Europe. No idea why they write many of their songs in Spanish, but then again, I don't know why Glenn Beck hasn't been shot yet, so what do I know?

My only disappointment with this is its shortness. 29 minutes is considered pretty normal for grindcore, but these guys have enough depth to their sound to stretch themselves a little bit more. It's not a series of short tunes that pretty much all sound alike, but rather nine actual songs that you can actually distinguish from one another. The sound is thick, warm and reminds me somewhat of another band with "Gore" in its name, the lamented Gorefest. The opening title track starts with a doomy crush accented by some piano that almost sounds like the "Halloween" soundtrack, then it picks up the pace and finally explodes into an excellent death metal blaster. The song is a perfect example of their songwriting acumen, but it's "Honor The Dead" that really blows me away...what fantastic riffing! "The Boozer" and "Capa" are songs that follow this template of intelligent time changes and monster riffs. But there are also short, sharp grind attacks such as "Puerco de Dinero" and "Necrophagic Pathologist" to keep you on your toes.

So quite a nice treat from Deutschland for fans of Napalm Death, Agathocles, Requiem and other Euro Death/Grind. Viva la muerte!
