FUNERAL WHORE

"Step Into Damnation"

By Dr. Abner Mality

Chalk Funeral Whore up as another guilty pleasure. Filthy and diseased death metal strongly reeking of the first two Grave records...and not much else. Well, I'm a sucker for old  Grave, so despite the utter lack of any innovation whatsoever, I must give Funeral Whore a decayed thumbs up.

The band hails from The Netherlands and if there's any country that can rival Sweden for sheer heaviness, it's Holland...Hail of Bullets, Asphyx, Pestilence, God Dethroned and now Funeral Whore stand as stark proof. "Step Into Damnation" sounds like it was produced somewhere UNDER a swamp and the resemblance to Grave is undeniable. In fact, on "Pierce My Flesh" and "Failure of the Sacrifice", I've not heard anyone do it better. And I do hear minute influences from Six Feet Under and Asphyx to make the package complete. The vocals are pretty decayed but pushed too far  back in the mix...definitely an area to improve on. The riffs are simple to the point of idiocy, but can be forgiven because of one fact: they are catchy enough to cause your body to twitch spasmodically whether you want to or not.

Simple, effective and utterly putrid old school death metal. Expect no more...or less!
