"Pleine Noirceur"

By Dr. Abner Mality

Canada's FUCK THE FACTS have been around for almost 20 years now and have to get some credit for hanging in there and getting material out on a regular basis. That being said, I just cannot get into what these guys are doing even though I appreciate certain aspects of it. They are pretty much labelled a grindcore band, but they're a pretty weird one. You won't get the usual REPULSION or HAEMORRHAGE type catchy punk grind. On "Pleine Noirceur", they seem to be drawing almost as much from post metal and noise rock as standard grind.

There's a lot of weird, angular riffing that sometimes goes from sad sounding tones to mathcore. To me, the guitar sound is thin, with a thick bass sound overpowering the guitar at almost every turn. Then there's the ferocious roars of Mel Mongeon, which are full of rage, but...that’s it. The more experimental side of FUCK THE FACTS arises on "Aube", "A Dying Light"  and "Sans Racines", all of which owe more to alt rock and post metal than grind or death metal. It's a very modern sound that touches on dissonance.

I just cannot connect with this as a whole, though there are sure parts that really rattle your teeth. I guess it may be "forward thinking", but give me cave man stuff like REPULSION any day...
