"Ugly Noise"

By Rusty Coffinnails

I'm not going to go into the history of Flotsam and Jetsam, I could write a full page or two on that alone. They have been around since the early 80s and I'll leave it at that.

I had high hopes for "Ugly Noise" to be a new thrash sensation of epic magnitude from some long time veterans of thrash but in the end I was kinda let down. The first track (also the title track) started out with promise, the heavy sound of concert style
piano moving in to a high energy metal montage but then it fell far short of the monstrous hit I had hoped for due to it's repetitive nature and somewhat whiny singing. Maybe I was expecting too much from these guys.

Most of the album reminded me of the made for radio metalish ballad bands from the mid 80s and early 90s with possibly one strong song per album and the rest just thrown together as filler. I will not deny that they are very talented at what they do but this is not new or cutting edge material by any means. The album gets quite
repetitive and laggy as it trudges along and quickly loses my interest as it turns into background noise.

I have tried to pinpoint a top pick or a bottom pick from this album but I am unable to because nothing stood out for me, the whole album kinda sounds the same. I neither love or hate it, it's like a bologna sandwich...not unique not good or bad just there in front of me and will likely soon forgotten.
