DRUG HONKEY

"Ghost In The Fire"

By Dr. Abner Mality

Somewhere in the midst of a wasteland of blasted ash sits the wreck of a building, half abbatoir-half factory. Through this hideous edifice trudges a cybernetic ghost, a freak of what was, trailing chains made of circuitry and nerve ganglia. Horror and despair shine in its robotic eyes. It enters a room full of twitching, detached body parts all hooked up to half-functioning equipment. Faces cry and leer...arms and hands convulse. These beings are condemned to roam here forever. And pulsing through the dead air is the soundtrack to their torment..."Ghost In the Fire" by Drug Honkey.

This is the second excursion through sonic hell from Drug Honkey and it makes the first one "Death Dub" sound jovial in comparison. Here the DOOM reigns supreme...the tracks all crawl on their hands and knees, never moving at more than a lethargic pace. You keep looking for relief and never get it here. This music oozes like slime. Opening cut "Order of the Solar Temple" is riff-based and metallic in texture. It's very heavy in the metal sense and pretty depressing. From there, things only get worse as Honkey adds more layers of tortured groans, screams and whispers to the beating, making it more purely industrial. Main man Paul Gillis sounds like he's cutting himself to pieces during these tunes. As the album continues, it seems to get slower and more hypnotic with tracks such as "In Black Robe" and "Out Of My Mind". You grit your teeth, determined to finish the ordeal.

"Twitcher" has a perverse electronic bounciness to it, a little energy, but sick and twisted energy. The album then mercifully ends with "Saturate...Annihilate", where things get real doom metal again, forming a nice bookend along with "Order of the Solar Temple"

It takes a special kind of soul to endure and enjoy this. And an even more twisted one to perform it. I salute Drug Honkey for coming up with maybe the bleakest overall album I've heard...and that's saying something. See if you can meet the challenge of "Ghost In The Fire".
