DRUG HONKEY

"Death Dub"

By Dr. Abner Mality

If you ever wonder what the Muzak at a meat packing plant killing floor sounds like, you now have your answer. "Death Dub" has actually been out for a while but is now getting a lot greater exposure thanks to Diabolical Conquest Records. This is some noisy, oppressive, grueling shit to listen to...and that can be taken as a recommendation by some people.

This is just about the ultimate in uneasy listening. A boiling, syrupy mass of sonic filth topped off with painful noise and diseased vocal distortions. I wouldn't classify it as metal, yet it is supremely heavy. What separates this from total tuneless noise is the throbbing, punishing bass that provides a strong and coherent backbeat to the rest of the music. This is bass that overwhelms and engulfs, like thick black tar. Fans of the meanest doom and drone will dig this. Also, a human drummer adds a more natural touch, instead of the sterile computerized stuff that usually accompanies noise rock like this. On top of the oozing bass riffs is a relentless attack of loud guitar, whacked out electro-industrial insanity and a variety of agonized, mush mouthed vocals. I can't make out much of what's being said, but in general it sounds something like "GROOAAARGH ARGH YAAAAH FUCK ARRRGH YOOOOGGGH PAIN FUCK YEEAAAAAGGGGH". Enlightening and uplifting. Track titles such as "The Devil Lasts Forever", "Death Threats" and the ever popular "Who The Fuck?" reveal the mood.

A live track "China Black" shows Drug Honkey can create the same sound in concert and there's also a cover of Pigface's "Burundi (Reconstruction)" to show where D.H.'s influence comes from. "Death Dub" is a pretty tough slog to sit through, but it's hard for me to imagine a more crushing and nihilistic sound sculpture coming out anytime soon.
