“And You Will Obey Me…”

By Dr. Abner Mality

Mr. Dave Ingram must be one hell of an old school Dr. Who fan. Not the new “Marvelized” shit, but the classic Dr. Who of the 70’s with Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker. “And You Will Obey Me…” is overflowing with references and samples from classic Who. The title is taken from a speech by Roger Delgado’s version of The Master, which is sampled here. “Omega”, “Eye of Harmony”, “Panopticon”…all are drawing inspiration from those epic adventures of the Time Lord…

The Who worship is cool, but the fact that it is part of one of the best death metal albums of the year is icing on the cake. If you loved Dave’s work on the great Benediction albums of the early 90’s, there’s no way you can miss this raging triumph of British death metal. With guitar work from Swedish mainstay Rogga Johanson, every track here swings with awesome riffing that mixes Celtic Frost, Discharge and the songcraft of Benediction and Bolt Thrower. This blows the doors off the last DATDM album and I thought that one was a scorcher, too. Rogga cuts loose with some melodic and even bluesy leads over the onslaught of crusty, catchy riffing while Dave sounds as good as he did 25 years ago.

Very, very hard to pick a favorite tune here, but there’s a certain majesty to “Omega” (yes, it’s about the baddy from old Dr. Who) that impresses the hell out of me. “Eye of Harmony” is another great one and the whole album kicks off with a bang with the thunderous assault of “Destroy the Infinite”.

Ingram is on the best ride of his career here. Along with his other bands Echelon and Ursinne, he is riding high. This is a can’t miss album!
