DEVANGELIC

"Resurrection Denied"

By Dr. Abner Mality

If you are hell bent to hear the same song over and over again, you can pretty much pick up any Nickelback album...or you can get stuff like "Resurrection Denied" by Italy's Devangelic. This is the sort of swill that has no real identity of its own except for being "brutal". As hard as it is to believe, there are entire labels that have existed for years putting out nothing but this kind of boilerplate death metal.

You can tick all the appropriate boxes. Canned machine gun drum sound? Check.Non-existent bass? Check. Pinched harmonic guitars that go "zwoop" and "zweep"? Check. Song titles like "Unfathomed Evisceration" and "Crown of Entrails"? Check. We could go on, but why bother? Everything here basically sounds the same. When brutality equals monotony, count me out.

The blasphemous, gory cover art is also kind of typical, but I will give Devangelic credit here, because it is much better rendered than many similar bands. It really will make you cringe. That's about it, though. This was hard labor to get through.

Give me Dismember and Obituary any day.
