COUNTDOWN “Demo” EP

FRIEND OR FOE “Foe” EP

By Dr. Abner Mality

Flatspot Records is a new label that’s trying to bring street level hardcore to the masses. The recent album from Mizery was a huge hit for them and here are some tough mugs with new Eps that they’ve added to their roster.

Countdown have roots in NYC and Boston…you can’t get much more authentic than that. The simply titled “Demo” EP is solid and honest hardcore that sounds authentic but doesn’t really knock it out of the park. They blow through four bare-knuckled cuts that pair crunchy riffs with rock n roll guitars and very “urban” sounding vocals. The tunes are all brief and hold to the time honored traditions of street hardcore from the East Coast. It’s heavy and reasonably dynamic, but for pure rage, Friend Or Foe pretty much toasts them.

Hailing from the heavy music hotspot of Richmond, VA, Friend Or Foe play some SERIOUSLY heavy and mean hardcore. The 5 cuts on “Foe” will part your hair with a grinding, raw guitar sound and bursts of speed that approach grind velocity. But the basics of the band are rooted in catchy hardcore riffing, like “True” and “Battle Scarred”. Nothing new at all about what FOF is doing, but this is a genre where sincerity trumps innovation.

Both Eps are worthy but if you must make a choice, I’d opt for “Foe”.
