COME BACK FROM THE DEAD

"The Coffin Earth's Entrails"

By Dr. Abner Mality

Come Back From the Dead is the latest band to try and take us back to the glory days of Swedish death metal. What caught my eye about this band is that former members of the great Machetazo are involved with it, along with members of Bokluk and Nashgul. The result? Another formulaic entry in the retro-death sweepstakes.

The sound is raw and buzzing, but in 2015, it's just not going to have the same impact that Entombed, Carnage and Dismember did in 1990. At some points, particularly on "Better Morbid Than Slaves", CBFTD's bald-faced riff-theft is breath-taking. Much of the album races by in perfunctory fashion, with tunes like "Haze of Blood" and "Hell Inside" making little lasting impact. I don't want to berate these guys unnecessarily, because they are having fun here and the attitude is correct, but "The Coffin Earth's Entrails" just emerges as another in a long line of albums devoted to a sound that peaked a long time ago.

Those who are total fanatics for Stockholm death metal can pick this up, but it is by no means mandatory.
