CANNABIS CORPSE

"Beneath Grow Lights, Thou Shall Rise"

By Dr. Abner Mality

Scuse me if I start hackin' while reviewing this one, the air is suddenly thick with smoke. Not only that, I might have to run to the bathroom now and then, as the sheer idiocy of the punning here overcomes my bladder control. But when the wheezing is done, I must admit...this stuff is pretty good! The music, not the weed...

And it's no mere novelty act either, although humor is a HUGE part of Cannabis Corpse's success! This is amazingly catchy and well-played death metal in pure early 90's tradition. It's not quite as raw as I thought it might be, but the technical skill of tracks like "Gateways To Inhalation" and "Where The Kind Lives" is faultless. Despite the fact the band's name is obviously a goof on Cannibal Corpse, a lot of the music on this particular album seems much more inspired by Morbid Angel and Deicide. If "Illud Divinum Insanus" killed your buzz, get your mojo back by listening to the Morbid-like highs of "Blaze of Torment" and the psychotropic title track.

All of the humor here comes in the song titles and lyrics. The music itself is delivered with utmost seriousness...how the vocalist keeps from giggling while delivering words to shit like "Dead By Bong" and "Lunatic of Pot's Creation" is one of the biggest mysteries of the year. His growls are grim to the max. Meanwhile, you'll be pissing yourself imagining the doped content of "Sworn To The Bag" and "Chapel of Bowls". Makes me smile just typing it...

Cannabis Corpse has milked this far more effectively than I ever dreamed they could have and "Beneath Grow Lights, Thou Shall Rise" is funny and furious both. I must now retreat to the kitchen, as the munchies have kicked in big time...
