“The Future State of Wicked”

By Dr. Abner Mality

Old thrashers never die, they just burrow underground like badgers until they feel the time is right and then claw their way back to the surface. So it is with New Jersey flesh rippers Blood Feast, who made a bit of a splash in the very late 80’s/early 90’s with their extremely crude and raw thrash metal.

I never really considered Blood Feast a top tier band but there was no denying their raw animalistic energy. They came as close as any American band to the feral sound of early Kreator/Sodom/Destruction and could almost be considered kind of death metal. I can’t really say that they are genius songwriters but the wild ferocity remains on the new Blood Feast record. They haven’t slowed down a bit! Tunes such as “INRI”,  “The Burn” and “Who Prays For the Devil” are flat out speed maulers with little finesse. Chris Natalini screams and yells like we all owe him money and guitar solos blast out of nowhere.

Some tracks are definitely better than others. “Brethren” has a cool catchy groove to it that’s slightly less frantic,  “The Underling” mixes things up with some slow stomping riffs and last track “The Burn” has a more composed, even epic feel. The rest is frankly fairly average but at least the dudes sound like they’re into it.
27 years after their last record “Chopping Block Blues”, Bloodfeast is back and it sounds like it could have just been a year between records!
