“Fallout Frenzy”

By Dr. Abner Mality

Looking for Neanderthal death metal with an overdose of ugly? Atoll have flown in from Arizona and will fulfill your slamming DM needs.

There are times when you just want to listen to something gross and ridiculously heavy. Ergo, “Fallout Frenzy”. It’s about 30 minutes of slam death full of short songs, slobbering mutant growls and simple, blunt riffs. Eventually it starts to blur into a mush like most of these albums do, but there is an undeniable crushing force to Atoll’s approach. Their mid-paced, slower attack yields some good riffing. Also, these guys have got a sick sense of humor, which makes them more palatable as well. Song titles like “Battlestar Gonorrhea”, “Global Wyrming” and “Full Gruntal Nudity” will bring a smile to your face.

The onslaught of mush-mouthed vocals kind of deadens things. The guy doesn’t know when to shut up and let the music breath, which means the nonstop barrage of growls gets very tiresome by the end of the record. “Fallout Frenzy” is prey to the usual shortcomings of this kind of material, but if lumbering, sick American death metal is something you need, you could do plenty worse. Be sure to wear your radiation suit when listening, though!
