“Dying Alone”

By Dr. Abner Mality

I don’t know when we’re going to get new records from Bolt Thrower and Benediction. But if you have a hunger for bulldozing death metal with brains like those two bands were known for, you’d be a fool to pass up this EP by France’s Affliction Gate. If there were four more songs here, this would be in the running for death metal record of the year.

We don’t hear much of this style anymore and that’s what makes “Dying Alone” special. These four songs are heavier than dump trucks full of concrete but are constructed and written in a very thoughtful manner. The pace is medium to fast but never full blast, which allows the chunky riffs to pulverize your bones. The vocals of one Mr.  Herostratos are also right out of the Karl Willets/Dave Ingram mode of grinding articulate growls. I can’t imagine anyone who’s a fan of Bolt Thrower, Benediction or even Asphyx not getting a huge boner after hearing Affliction Gate. There’s a doomy atmosphere through each tune and the band are also capable of  melodic lead work. Everything comes together on the superb track “Manicheism Inertia”. I don’t have a friggin’ clue what it’s about but it is just a superb example of doomy, tank-like death metal.

These guys need to get back in the studio quick and come up with a whole  album of this material. They fill a lot of gaps in the extreme music scene.
