It can’t be a coincidence that I hear this album a day after it was revealed that NASA detected signs of a parallel universe where time runs backward. Such a discovery would definitely be up KTHONIIK CERVIIKS’ transtemporal alley. These German freaks have proudly picked up the mantle of VOI VOD and taken that style of music to an even more insane level. They’ve been on my radar for a few years now and “Æequiizoiikum” continues their cosmic spaced out speed metal attack.

The way these cats play defies description. There’s no doubt that the mighty VOI VOD is the major influence, with a lot of angular, almost jazz-like riffing, but these guys are much more into the speed and death metal part of the equation. VEKTOR is another comparison. After a weird intro of beeping space noises, “Odyssey 3000” blasts off with wild speed riffing that is not only off the wall, but catchy as hell. It performs the amazing fear of being unpredictable and yet smooth flowing as well.  The title track is a bit slower and almost hymn-like but it isn’t long before it jumps into the particle accelerator and hits warp speed.

I do think the second half of the album is not as accessible as the first. “Para-dog-son- Demogorgon” is so experimental, it will make your head explode and “Kollekting Koffin Nails” is much the same. These are tunes that take a lot of concentration. But even so, they are a fascinating exercise in the outer limits of metal.

If you haven’t hitched a ride on the KC rocketship yet, put your space helmet on, take a deep breath, and try to keep up with  “Æequiizoiikum”.
